Mr. Darcy's Pride

At the beginning of the novel "Pride and Prejudice" by Jane Austen, Mr. Darcy is someone you would describe as "too big for his britches." He listens to what others think of certain people and makes their negative observations his own. He turns his nose up at Lizzy because of her family and lesser social standing, and although he is in love with her and wants to marry her, he tells her how far he is lowering himself in the eyes of society by doing so. Lizzy is greatly insulted (!) and tuns down his offer of marriage. In the chapters that follow, his love for her opens his eyes to his own pride, and he goes out of his way to prove to her that he isn't a prideful person. Proverbs 8:13 tells us that God hates pride and arrogance, and in Matthew 23:12 Jesus tells us that whoever humbles himself will be exalted. God loves the humble heart. Society loves the prideful.

No Nancy Drew Mystery

I've always loved reading Nancy Drew mystery books, and even at the age of 53 I collect and re-read the old ones from the 40s, 50s and 60s. I love old words like "roadster" and "chum", and I love how teenage Nancy solves mysteries and catches crooks. The saving grace of our Lord Jesus Christ is no mystery, though many people like to study it to death, pick it to pieces and change it into a complicated puzzle with a fancy, made-up name. The Lord's saving grace is a wonderful, beautiful gift stated simply in John 3:16: "For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son that whosoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life." (NIV) He wants us to believe and live with Him forever, not turn His Word into a mystery that can't be solved. "Now I rejoice in what was suffered for you, and I fill up in my flesh what is still lacking in regard to Christ's afflictions, for the sake of His body, which is the church. I have become its servant by the commission God gave me to present to you the Word of God in its fullness---the mystery that has been kept hidden for ages and generations, but is now disclosed to the saints. To them God has chosen to make known among the Gentiles the glorious riches of this mystery, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory." (Colossians 1:24-27 NIV)

Defiled by t.v. shows

Last night I watched the season premiere of "Dancing With the Stars" and cringed everytime commercials were shown for the new fall season. I mostly watch PBS, mind you, so these commercials nearly caused the hair to stand up on my head. At my church we're studying the book of Daniel in the sermons, in Sunday School and in a Beth Moore Bible study. When food considered unclean was set before Daniel at the king's table, we read, "But Daniel resolved not to defile himself...." (chapter one, verse eight NIV). In the Bible study we're learning that we live in a modern day Babylon, surrounded by sin. We have to find ways to separate ourselves from this Babylon. Like Daniel, we must resolve not to defile ourselves. If someone were to set Daniel in front of a t.v. set and show him so of those t.v. shows, he wouldn't watch them. He would not defile himself by watching them. He would not become a part of this sinful Babylon we live in and say, "Well, that's all there is on t.v." We need to turn off the t.v. and find something better to do with our time. Something that won't defile us.

Your First Love

So many young people stray away from the Lord when they get a boyfriend or girlfriend or when they go to college. It's like they forget all about Jesus and what He did for them. They stop going to church, and I hate to say this, but they probably stop praying or reading their Bible. After all, He's not really in their hearts anymore. "Yet I hold this against you: You have forsaken your first love." (Rev. 2:4 NIV) Yes, Jesus Christ should be a Christian's first love. He should be on our minds and our hearts when we awaken in the morning and when we go to bed at night. We should think of Him often and tell Him how much we love Him. How much more should we do that for Him than we do it for those we love here on earth? Look what He did for us, and yet how many times do we forsake Him? Jesus Christ: first in our hearts forever.

The Opposite of Lofty and Noisy

"In repentance and rest is your salvation, in quietness and trust is your strength, but you would have none of it." (Isaiah 30:15 NIV) Ladies, we live lives of noise and business, cynicism and distrust, and never seeing that we are sinning each day. Whooooa! We need to slow down. We need to "be still and know that He is God." We need to relax, pray, and trust in the Lord. We need to ask Him to bring our sins to our attention so that we can repent and come before Him clean and new. Do you enjoy always being busy? Do you enjoy always doing, doing, doing? Do you hear God when you're busy? Do you feel the workings of the Holy Spirit when you are always busy? Do you recognize the power and majesty of God when you are always busy? Rest, be still, be quiet, trust, repent. Why were the people we read about in the Bible talking with God and being visited by Him? Where did He visit them? In quiet, deserted places. "Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth." (Psalm 46:10 NIV) I don't know about you, but I'm going to start saying "No." I'm going to do the work the Lord has given me to do and say no to that which He hasn't given me to do. I'm going to spend time quietly with my Lord.

Leave the Scars

I heard a song on the radio this morning entitled "Heal the Wound But Leave the Scar." All of us have done things in our pasts of which we're ashamed. We know that God forgives us, but we have trouble forgiving ourselves. When we pray for Him to heal our wounds, we should also pray for Him to leave the scars as a constant reminder of His wonderful, saving grace. Isaiah 53:5 tells us, "by His wounds we are healed." (NIV) Praise God for giving His One and Only Son for us so that we could be forgiven of our sins. Forgive yourself as He has forgiven you. Heal our wounds, Sweet Jesus, but please leave the scars.

True Friends

If you ever have a friend you can trust, one who stands by you in good times and bad, thank God for that friend. They are rare, indeed. "A friend loves at all times." (Proverbs 17:17 NIV) Over the years I've had friends who lied on me, stabbed me in the back, talked bad about me, and probably did things I don't even know about. Praise God for good, trustworthy, loving friends. They are a treasure. "A man of many companions may come to ruin, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother." (Proverbs 18:24 NIV) Do you have a friend like that? Pray for him or her everyday, and let that person know that they are special to you. Stop and send a prayer, a card or an email to them right now. Thank You, dear God, for trustworthy, loving friends!

In Deep Distress?

David had sinned, and the Lord had the prophet Gad tell him, "This is what the Lord says: I am giving you three options. Choose one of them for Me to carry out against you." (2 Samuel 24:12 NIV) David's three options were either three years of famine in his land, three months of fleeing from his enemies while they pursued him or three days of plague in his land. And what did David say to Gad? "I am in deep distress. Let us fall into the hands of the Lord, for His mercy is great; but do not let me fall into the hands of men." (verse 14) God is always in control, and He loves us. Co-workers may make us feel like we've died and gone to hell; people may even hate us or be jealous of us, but isn't it better to be judged and disciplned by God rather than man? "Those whom I love I rebuke and discipline. So be earnest, and repent." (Revelation 3:19 NIV) He is our Heavenly Father. We are His children. He disciplines through love. I choose God's discipline over that of people who don't like me. How about you?

A Love Letter From God

If you want to read a love letter from God, read Ezekiel 36:25-26 and 28b (NIV): "I will sprinkle clean water on you, and you will be clean; I will cleanse you from all your impurities and from all your idols. I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh." "...you will be my people, and I will be your God." If you ever yearn for love notes, for valentines, for loving gifts, just read your Bible. There are many love letters from God.

What Are Your Idols?

In Sunday School this morning our lesson was on Daniel chapter three. Nebuchadnezzar built this huge golden idol that could be seen 15 miles away (must have been the size of the water tower back here on the ridge). He expected everyone to bow down and worship the false god because he commanded it. Thing is, Daniel and his friends refused to worship it. They stayed faithful to the Lord God Almighty. They then got thrown into a furnace of fire (a very powerful furnace), but didn't get even a hair burned. They were in the furnace strolling around with someone who looked like "the Son of God." We need to ask ourselves 2 questions: 1) Are we staying faithful to our Lord God Almighty, drawing a line in the sand and refusing to cross that line to be a part of this sinful world, and, 2) What are the idols in our lives? What is taking our thoughts and our hearts away from our Lord Jesus? If He isn't first in our lives, then something is terribly wrong. And if He isn't first in our lives, we may not survive the next fiery furnace that comes along.
